The sun dipped in the sky as they crawled through the ghost-like town. Cars were parked neatly in spots, business signs hung, but nothing stirred. Not even the wind. Storm shivered.

Where were the people? Where were the animals?

“This can’t be it,” she whispered, afraid to break the fragile silence in the truck and outside as well.

“Keep your eyes open for something, anything strange.”

“The whole damn place is strange,” she said under her breath.

His soft chuckle hit her in spots she’d rather not acknowledge at the moment. She curled her fingers into her palms, pressing tight. It didn’t work. Desire still hummed in her body.

They were on the other side of town now. Storm looked back. “Nothing. We must have missed it.” What, she didn’t know.

“I’ll go up farther and turn around,” he murmured, glancing in the truck mirrors and then out the windshield.

He pressed down on the gas pedal to make it up the hill and around the bend. There were old shacks dotting the land; most barely were standing.

“Look. Down there.” Storm pointed. “Do you see that?”

Off in the distance, Riley spotted the old mine, the out building half gone, a pile of rusty metal, a couple of boulders, and the empty entrance. “The mine?”

“I swear I saw something move.”

Riley slowed the vehicle down and inched along the small road. A flash of white caught his eye. “Someone’s moving, you mean.”

His heart jumped when he realized there were four of them, positioning themselves around the mine shaft opening.

“I’m going up farther and we’ll ditch the truck, make sure it’s under cover, and then we’ll double back.”

She didn’t listen. Storm clicked open the door and hopped out. “Sorry.”

“Storm, get back here,” he called in a raised whisper.

But she was gone.

His heart dropped to his knees.
